Alleged rapist of three teenage girls 'incapable of any restraint'
A LLANELLI man "incapable of exercising any restraint in sexual matters" has gone on trial accused of raping three teenage girls.
One of Dean Charles Cleobury's alleged victims fell asleep at a party and woke in horror to find him having sex with her, jurors heard.
Another read about the case in the Evening Post and contacted the police to claim she had been raped by Cleobury a few years earlier.
Then, while on bail after being charged in relation to both girls, Cleobury allegedly raped a third teenager in woodland at Pembrey Country Park last summer.
Yesterday, after 22-year-old Cleobury, of Rhandir, Bynea, pleaded not guilty at Swansea Crown Court, the prosecution described him as a man "who seemingly does not understand the word No".
Geraint Walters, opening the prosecution case, said that in the autumn of 2008 the defendant was a guest at a party in Loughor, attended by some 15 teenagers.
One of them was a 16-year-old girl who fell asleep in an upstairs bedroom.
"In the dead of night the 16-year-old then woke up to find somebody having sex with her," said Mr Walters.
"At first she thought it was her boyfriend — but it soon became apparent it wasn't him at all.
"She began protesting and the person made his way out of the room — and that person was the defendant, the prosecution say."
According to some people at the party, the court heard, Cleobury had been behaving "strangely" before the alleged rape.
At some stage, said Mr Walters, he had gone into the room, pulled back the duvet and seen her sleeping "in a state of undress". Later, he went back upstairs and allegedly raped her.
Arrested, Cleobury denied involvement, telling officers: "It wasn't me."
But his "posturing" in police interviews was no more than an attempt to "wriggle away from the facts", claimed the prosecutor.
The court heard that after Cleobury was charged with rape a short report about the case appeared in the Evening Post — and this triggered a complaint of rape made by a second complainant.
This was a Loughor woman, now in her early 20s, who knew Cleobury and who claimed to have been raped by him around five years ago when they were both in their teens. This woman and the first complainant were "complete strangers, the one to the other", the court heard.
According to this woman, Cleobury had been "incapable of exercising any restraint in sexual matters" — and if he wanted sex, he was determined to have it.
"If this witness is right, the defendant seems to have been incapable of stopping himself," said Mr Walters.
Interviewed about this woman's account, Cleobury denied having sex with her without her consent.
The third complainant in the case was a 15-year-old Llanelli girl who was allegedly raped by the defendant last summer when he was on bail after being charged in relation to the other two.
Cleobury, who knew the girl, is accused of sexually attacking her when she was at Pembrey Country Park on a camping trip.
As they chatted one day last August, Cleobury led her to a secluded path and began kissing her and touching her in a sexual way, said Mr Walters. The girl "did not really mind this", the court heard, but she objected when he then proceeded to pull off her clothes.
"He then raped her despite her protestations that she did not want sex with him," said Mr Walters.
Questioned about the 15-year-old, Cleobury admitted kissing and fondling her, but denied that sexual intercourse occurred.
The case continues.
