Alfie's 'shame' at antics ahead of coming out

WALES rugby favourite Gareth Thomas has told fellow housemates in the Big Brother house that "he wasn't proud" of things he had done before revealing his sexuality.

Gareth and his fellow Celebrity Big Brother contestants completed a task which highlighted links they had with each other and revealed their indiscretions.

Known as 'Alfie' to his legions of followers, the 37- year-old surprised the sporting world in 2009 when he came out as gay, said he was married to the "most amazing girl" before revealing his sexuality and told housemates that he "wasn't proud of some of the things he had done".

The popular former player's story has also attracted Hollywood, with actor Mickey Rourke interested in playing him in a biopic of his life.

As part of the task, the housemates had to guess what they had in common, with Loose Women star Denise Welch saying it was like "The Priory" — a rehabilitation centre frequented by many celebrities.

Meanwhile rugby pal Shane Williams is backing the former Wales international to win Big Brother.

"Alfie will get stronger as the show goes on," Shane told a Sunday paper.

"I think he will be there right until the end and he will have a good chance of winning it.

"I think he is the only Welsh person in there, so hopefully all of Wales will vote for him.

"I have never voted before but I am going to be voting to keep him in there.

"I'll make an exception and vote for Alfie."

Swansea-born Shane said he was sure the player would get along with fellow housemate and Hollywood hell-raiser Michael Madsen.

Ospreys winger Shane — who recently retired from international rugby — added: "It will be fun watching Alfie with him because he is quite a character — I think everyone in there comes from very different backgrounds.

"He is the kind of personality Alfie will get on with, someone who has got a lot of history and stories — and he seems quite funny."

"It was a shock when I heard he was going to be in the show, I had no idea. I was going to bypass it this year until I knew Alfie was going to be on.

"And he has been doing very well.

"You have got on there a lot of celebrities who are used to the limelight, and with Alfie what you see is what you get, and that comes across very well on TV.

"He is a very contagious personality and will get on well with everyone."
