A HEARTBROKEN couple who lost their son in a plane crash three years ago are aiming to create a log cabin for disabled youngsters at Afan Forest Park in his memory.

Richard and Margaret Collins tragically lost their 22-year-old son, Alex Collins, and his girlfriend, Bethan Jones, when they became victims of a plane crash in Thailand in 2007.

In memory of the pair, Mr and Mrs Collins set up a charity — The Garnwen Trust — and they are currently in discussions with Neath Port Talbot Council to build the log cabin at Afan Forest Park.

It is hoped the cabin will enable groups of disabled and able-bodied people to enjoy short breaks in the forest park.

Mr Collins said: "Our aim is to deliver a working memorial and something that is unique after having to lose two fantastic kids in the way we did.

"We would like to put our energy towards providing a facility that benefits the community.

"We have raised £65,000 so far, and we need around £85,000.

"We will be able to cater for disabled and special needs, and it will also be used for able- bodied people.

Sustainable

"We are also very conscious that it will be a green facility. It has to be economical and sustainable.

"It is very exciting.

"Alex and Beth would have loved it."

The 52-year-old, who lives in Maesteg, said: "The reason we chose Afan Forest Park is because there is the route from our valley into the Afan Valley.

"I can walk from my home over the Garnwen mountain, and I can arrive in the Afan Valley.

"It was meant to be."

Since it was set up, The Garnwen Trust has already raised more than £40,000, some of which has been donated to Headway, Bridgend, the Burns Unit at Morriston Hospital and orphans of the tsunami.
