Airlift for man crushed on Swansea-Cork ferry
A CREW member on board the Swansea to Cork ferry was crushed by a watertight door late last night.
The 47-year-old Polish man is now in North Devon District Hospital with a suspected broken pelvis.
The incident happened 10 miles off the coast of Milford Haven at 11.46pm last night as the MV Julia made its way from Swansea to Cork.
Nurses on the ship linked up over the phone with a doctor in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary who decided the casualty needed to be evacuated for further treatment.
A rescue helicopter was then called to the scene and the crew member was airlifted to hospital.
He will undergo scans and tests to assess his condition this morning.
Ferry operator Fastnet Line has launched its own internal investigation into the incident.
Phil Jones, chief executive of Fastnet Line, said: "We can confirm that there was an accident on board MV Julia last night where a crew member was injured by a hydraulic door.
"Milford Haven Coastguard was alerted and the man was airlifted to North Devon District Hospital.
"He remains stable with a suspected broken pelvis.
"We are conducting our own investigation into the accident and The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been informed."
The MV Julia continued its voyage from Swansea to Cork following the incident.
Fastnet Line launched its Swansea to Cork service in March this year.
