Age equality law hailed
NEW laws outlawing age discrimination have been heralded by ministers as a significant step forward for equality.
The changes, the final part of the Equality Act 2010, ensure that older people cannot be discriminated against in the provision of goods, facilities and services. The new rules complement existing laws banning age discrimination in the workplace.

“My brother in law is a rubbish driver and had several crashes in his time, my niece is a good driver with no accidents in her first 4 years but her insurance is 3 times his. Is that fair? I think not.
I'm older (mid 40's) but my insurance came down when I put my wife on my policy, she never drives unless in an emergency (her choice) so we save money, but for why exactly?
Insurance is a racket, they use statistics but the stats can be, and are, manipulated so insurers can make the most money. Insurers always discriminate but it's legal, legalised robbery really.
Maybe if uninsured people were properly punished insurance for us responsible drivers would be more affordable. I have a cousin who has been banned from driving all his life since 22 (26 years) yet he never took a test and never gone to prison for drink driving (8 counts) no insurance, no MOT, leaving the scene of an accident and others. Where is the justice in that?”

“benny you miss the point. Working with a blowtorch is a higher risk and thus justifiably will cost more. Being young is not in itself a higher risk (though being less experienced is)”

“PruPhneeda - U17's are legally allowed to drive on private land and they are entitled to have insurance. Nothing at all wrong with that. So get your facts straight before posting such nonsense.”

"philosoraptor, I would'nt class the high cost of car insurance for u17's as discrimination
----------------
I would. Cost of insurance should ignore age completely and consider driving experience instead. There's no justification for a 20 year old with 3 years solid driving to be paying more than a 45 year old who has just passed their test.”

“philosoraptor, All insurance companies put different people in different cateogories.I was a self employed plumber all my working life and had to take out public liability insurance.Obviously working with blowlamps made me higher risk than the bricklayer or carpenter working along side me even though i never caused or had an accident in all my working life. Why should the cost to the bricklayer or the carpenter increase to cover the risk of the plumber? which is what would happen if the at risk cateogory was'nt charged more”

“Regardless of what you say benny, that is not how our society is supposed to work. For if a new driver, who has never driven, is being lumbered with huge insurance premiums before he/she has even driven a car without an instructor or examiner, then he/she is not being judged as guilty of being a bad driver. That is discrimination and there are plenty of poor older drivers on the road.
Ever heard about "lying with statistics?" How come we are never allowed to see these so called statistics?”
