Boots worn by Adrian Forbes at Swansea's Vetch Field on display at new exhibition

FOOTBALL boots worn by Adrian Forbes when he scored the last league goal at Swansea's historic Vetch Field are among the items on display at a new exhibition in the city.

The exhibition now on at Swansea Museum in Victoria Road also includes a 1901 photo of the Swansea Excelsiors football team, a complete set of programmes from the Swans' 1964 FA Cup run and a seven-inch single of the 1979 Swansea City song.

Adrain Forbes scores the last league goal at the Vetch in 2005, and his boots have now been donated to a special exhibition to celebrate the Swans’ centenary.

It has been made possible thanks to a partnership between Swansea Council, the National Waterfront Museum and Swans100 – a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to explore, conserve and celebrate the heritage of Swansea City FC in its centenary year of 2012.

The exhibition is split into two halves — the first at Swansea Museum to concentrate on the fans' stories and their involvement in the club; the second at the National Waterfront Museum to look at the role of the club as a leading name in Welsh football. The National Waterfront Museum half of the exhibition opens on December 22. Both exhibitions run until January 27.

Other aspects of the Swansea Museum exhibition include a 1912 programme for Swansea Town's first professional league match, a homemade rosette from the 1960s and a programme from the 1986 friendly against mighty Manchester United.

Councillor Nick Bradley, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: "The Swans are very high-profile at the moment because of their Premier League status and magnificent recent performances against Liverpool and Newcastle.

"But this exhibition doesn't just look at the last few years. It features memorabilia from the last century and will appeal to both Swans fans and anyone with an interest in history."

A touring exhibition bringing together sports items collected by museums across Wales over the past 60 years has also opened at Swansea Museum.

The Pan-Wales Sport exhibition includes a uniform worn by a Swansea-born member of the 1958 Empire and Commonwealth Games.
