'Accused raped me as a teen'
ONE of the three alleged rape victims of Llanelli man Dean Cleobury said she contacted the police after reading in the Evening Post that he had "done it to somebody else."
The Loughor woman, now in her early 20s, claimed she was raped by Cleobury five years ago when they were both in their teens.
She raised the alarm last spring after seeing a short report in the Post that he had been charged with raping a 16-year-old girl the previous autumn.
Cleobury of Rhandir, Bynea, is further accused of raping a 15-year-old girl last summer when she was camping at Pembrey Country Park.
The 22-year-old defendant, formerly of Culfor Road, Loughor, pleaded not guilty to rape charges involving all three complainants when his trial began on Monday at Swansea Crown Court. The three women cannot be identified because of legal protection.
Giving evidence on day four of the case, the Loughor woman in her early 20s claimed that, five years ago, Cleobury forced himself upon her when she did not want to have sex with him.
He ignored her protests when she begged him to stop, she said.
The woman claimed that, at the time, Cleobury had dared her to report him to the police — and one reason she had not told anybody was that she had been scared.
Cross-examined by Frank Phillips, defending, the woman said she eventually contacted the police last year after a short report in the Post said Cleobury had been charged with rape.
"I saw in the paper that he had done it to somebody else," she said. "I then felt guilty that I had let him get away with it. I felt it was my fault that he had gone and done it again.
"I felt guilty because I had not wanted anyone else to go through it."
Yesterday the jury saw a video-recorded interview when detectives spoke to the 15-year- old Llanelli girl who was allegedly raped by Cleobury last August.
The teenager said she and the defendant chatted one morning last August as they walked near the ski slope at Pembrey Country Park. She thought he was about 18.
After he took her down a lane, they began kissing and she was "OK with this."
But he then pulled down her trousers and ordered her lie on the ground, she said.
She was adamant that when Cleobury then had sex with her she was not consenting.
"I was telling him to stop but he just carried on," she said.
The case continues.
