SUNDAY saw the second of this year's South West Wales Association of Sea Angling Clubs Winter League matches take place at Aberavon Beach.

Plenty of fish were landed throughout the day. Species included dogfish, rays, whiting, bass, flounder, turbot, golden grey mullet and pouting.

First was Peter Hammond from Ferryside with 480 points. His winning card included a ray of around 8lb. Second was Andy Bunston of Bridgend with 368 points, with Shaun Tucker of Swansea third with 396 points.

Joe Arch of Cardiff was fourth with 356 points.

Meanwhile, in the Stadium Cars Team League, Gower Rockhoppers beat Aberystwyth 4-1 at Aberavon.

Tony Oates, Chris Isaac, Martin Richards and John Hearn scored points for the Rockhoppers, with Clive Pearce scoring Aberystwyth's only point.

Top Peaches lead the way with 38 points ahead of Gower Rockhoppers, who have 31. Prawn Stars are third with 29, ahead of Penlan (19), SWWASAC Muppets (19), Aberystwyth (19) and Gowerton (17).

SA1 are bottom of the pile with 11.

Festival

The Swansea Bay Cod Festival takes place on January 8 for small boats and charter boats.

Organised by Swansea Yacht and Sub Aqua Club's Angling Section, this annual event once again sees a good quality prize list headed by a cash prize of £1,200.

Fishing times are 9am to 4.30pm, with last weigh-in 7pm.

Alternative dates if cancelled are January 22 or February 5.

There is free boat launch and recovery from the club slipway. Entry is £10 and you can pre-book at Swansea Angling Centre, HR Jones, Country Stores and Mainwaring's Tackle from January 2 or at Swansea Yacht and Sub Aqua clubhouse on competition day up to 8.30am.

Seren-y-Mor skipper Kevin Axtell reports that a party of anglers from Seven Sisters made the following catches: Steve Webb three small-eyed rays, John Bevan one small-eyed ray, Ben Cross one small-eyed ray 8lb 4oz, Steve Morgan two small-eyed rays 8lb, Anthony Say conger 12lb and Steve Morgan small-eyed ray 8lb.
