SOUTH West Wales AM Bethan Jenkins is among a number of Assembly Members to throw her support behind a debate on lowering the voting age to 16.

Despite the fact the Assembly has no power to change the voting age, Ms Jenkins is among a number of AMs who has put forward a motion on the idea calling for a change in the law.

Another AM supporting the motion is Conservative Paul Davies.

He said: "As a country, we are willing to see our young people join the armed forces at the age of 16, have children and get married and yet we seem to think that youngsters are not mature enough to vote at that age."

    “ArthurRittick
    This is a LibDem-led debate.
As far as I can tell, only one Labour AM has spoken in favour of it.”

“There isn't a pass or fail as such, your vote is multiplied by a weighting based on your score in the test. Who you decide to vote for is irrelevant, the point is to prove you know the implications of your vote, even if it is for a loony party”

“Hacker_jack - I take it that if someone passes the test and then votes LibDem they are counted as undecided and hence a wasted vote.”

“Voting should be open to everyone but weighted based on how well you do on a 20 point test that assesses your knowledge of politics, economics and the manifestos presented by the candidates.

I'd rather the vote of an intelligent and aware 16 year old counts for far more than the normal ignorant adult I see exercising their right.”

“I guess that was a case of Muphry's Law. It appeared twice because it did not post the first time. I thought it was the link so I removed it in my subsequent posting.

I am not sure if the "what you say boy, what you say boy" was a statement or a question. See the value of punctuation.”

“I suppose the next debate will be about lowering the legal age for drinking to 16, given that Tory AM Paul Davies seems to think that because young people can get married, join the forces etc at 16 then why not let them vote.

The WAG do not have the powers to lower the voting age so WHY are they wasting precious time debating the issue. Surely they have enough REAL problems in Wales to deal with that they actually have the powers to do.

Still, what do we expect from a Labour gov't, other than pie-in-the-sky thinking?”

“Dai_Chotomy - Neathboy seems to be an 'on the fence' kind of guy (based on previous threads) and hence his opinions should not be taken with any conviction. Exactly example of partisan political will. I say they are wrong not because of policy but we need to disagree for the sake of disagreeing. It matters to "sticklers" like me.

Neathboy - Lynne Truss's "Eats Shoot and Leave: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation" can help you. Available from all good bookshops.”
