6ft hole halts rugby match when it appears 10 minutes from time at Aberavon RFC game
THERE was a hole lot of head scratching at the Aberavon RFC vs Bristol game on Saturday.
10 minutes from close of play a 6ft hole, thought to have been caused by a burst drain, appeared, forcing the players off the pitch.
Bristol was leading 24-20 when the referee called off the game, though there is no suggestion that the Wizards supporters were tunnelling under the pitch to help their lads out in the Irish Cup tussle.
Aberavon RFC chairman Andrew John carted earth to the site in a wheelie bin and the fire brigade spent 10 minutes trying to fill the hole before it was deemed unsafe to continue.
The organising committee will decide whether Bristol's bonus-point victory will stand or be replayed.
The incident has caused a flurry of dreadful puns on social media, but visiting fans don't seem to be holding a grudge about it.
#rugbybristol Tweeted: "Apart from the whole hole incident we had a great time visiting @AberavonRFC. A proper rugby club, with proper fans."
