Of course, Britain has got the most excessive binge drinking problem in Europe. As well as teenage pregnancies and you name it.
But on the other hand there is no other European country with such a nanny state brigade as the UK, namely your great NHS.

Yes when I went skiing in Norway I took the max. duty-free alcohol in to sell to the local night-spot to mitigate prices to me.”

“What gets me about the whole subject is the general dishonesty.
Nobody is really interested in people's health.
The bare fact is they've found another source for squeezing money
out of the general population.
If anyone could prove to me that he/she was genuinely concerened
I'd probably be happy to pay more for any type of alcoholic beverage.

A friend of mine who lives in Sweden couldn't believe "how cheap" alcohol is over here compared to what the govenment imposed on extra taxes in Sweden, going along with alcohol only being available in government run outlets.
And still they have a massive problem with binge drinking and alcoholism.
Like in many other Scandinavian countries.
She told me the Norwegians come to Sweden to buy "cheap booze".
So it's even more expensive in Norway. And they really do have a problem with alcohol, up there.
On the other hand, I have first hand experience in alcohol (i.e. red wine) consumption in mediterranean countries where even young children are being offered red wine/water to go with their lunch/dinner. No problems there!
Imposing such a "health" tax on alcohol will only help the tax department (or not, looking at the money they are watsing on stupid ideas).
That's why I personally don't think it's a good idea or will work at all.”
