£18k clean-up bill for city fountain
LITTERBUGS and booze-fuelled pranksters are continuing to cost taxpayers money by fouling Swansea's city centre fountain.
All sorts of muck and gubbins such as food containers, beer cans and traffic cones have been fished out by the contractor responsible for the fountain's maintenance.

“Selwyn - you make a good point. A City should have a War Memorial in a central place. Swansea has a couple, but they are on the seafront or tucked away in SA1. It woyld be nice to have a large central square where these memorials could be placed securely.”

“How on earth di it cost that amount?!
Did they have a team of workmen down there for month's on end?.
Why give the job to a contractor, the council must be able to do the job themselves for a lot less!

“Interesting comments. The castle Gardens were very pretty but as I recall people used to complain that they were frequented by tramps and alchoholics - so not much changes there. It is a good idea to have some sort of central square to give focus to a town but perhaps Castle Square, next to Wine st and High street, is not the best place. Personally, I would like to see one replace that slum called the St David's Centre - probably room for some greenery there too.Cheaper and quicker than rebuilding the shopping centre - who wants more shops now anyway - and it would transform the City Centre. Castle Square could then be dug up and replanted - perhaps highlighting the archaeological remains that lie underground there.”

“When I was a little girl (down here from London on my holidays), this area was a pretty park. My nan used to take me to feed the pigeon and it was lovely. This piece of concrete is UGLY, depressing and embarrassing to Swansea.”

“(re:anon, the square in bristol is called queens square not corn square)
there's a nice green square in the centre of bristol called queens square which swansea could copy.”

“Steve from Uplands, I often see comments from you in this column and sometimes I wonder which planet you are from. So you are saying grass, flowers and few bins cost more than pressure washing Yorkshire stone slabs that need specialist cleaning, unblocking a huge vandalised monstrosity of a fountain on a regular basis, using chemicals to remove graffiti from concrete, the removing of metal studs from concrete to please the skateboarders, costs less than sunshine and rain on nature's own? Where are you from planet Zod? I think you need to re-calculate the potential spending here.”

“If we had Castle Gardens back the way it was, I'm sure it would cost more than £18K to maintain, so we wouldn't actually save any money by getting it back.”
