107th bithday for Mumbles' Connie Harvey, but mum was 114
THERE is something special in the genes of Constance Harvey’s family.
Yesterday she celebrated her 107th birthday.
What is more remarkable is her mother lived to the grand old age of 114.
Constance, who is known as Connie, celebrated reaching the milestone birthday with a cake and birthday cards at Parkway Residential Home in Sketty.
She will also be having a family do on Saturday, where they'll be having a small party.
Doctors have said recently that the key to a long life in women is for their immune system to age more slowly.
But Connie says her secret to reaching 107 is good genes.
She said: “My grandmother lived until she was 98 which was a good age in those days.
“Also my mother died when she was 114 which made her one of the oldest people in the world, 30 years ago.”
Connie was born in Mumbles in 1906. She married her husband Christopher at All-Saints Church when she was 24, then moved to Brynmill, where she went on to have three children.
She lived in the same house until she could no longer manage alone and moved into Swansea Council’s Parkway Residential Home at the age of 103, where she still happily lives today.
She said: “I have had a good and happy life and feel like it is quite an achievement to reach 107.
“I am really happy here and am well looked after.
“My birthday has been great fun and I have really enjoyed today.”
Debbie Shepherd-Thomas, assistant manager at Parkway, said Connie is an example for everyone.
She said: “Connie is an inspiration to us all. Her mind is still very active, she likes to keep up with the daily news and enjoys talking to the residents and staff about their lives.
“She is interested in changes locally and nationally and loves her native Swansea. Connie talks affectionately about the days she spent in the family caravan at Broughton near Llangennith, fishing and swimming. She still loves to spend time in the outdoors and will sit on the patio on a sunny day.”
Councillor Mark Child, Swansea Council's cabinet member for wellbeing, said: "To have an active mind and interested outlook is fantastic at 107 years old. I hope Mrs Harvey has a wonderful birthday and it's lovely that our staff have worked so hard to make the occasion so special for her.”
