AS many as 1,200 extra jobs could be created in Carmarthenshire after plans were revealed for a giant business park.

Work is due to start next spring to create the £13.5 million scheme to the west of Carmarthen, near Cross Hands.

The project has a completion target of June 2015.

The 19-hectare site has five development plots that which — it is hoped — will be taken up by companies looking to invest in Carmarthenshire.

The potential floor building space on offer is 40,000 square metres. Carmarthenshire Council leader Kevin Madge said the promise of new jobs would help hundreds of families in the county.

“Jobs are a priority for this administration and this employment site has the potential for over 1,200 jobs — which are desperately needed,” he said.

“The site will provide a high quality environment for businesses, and our officers are confident it will attract significant investment.”

The project has been called Cross Hands East, and includes a new access road from the A48 to Black Lion Road, infrastructure, landscaping and five development plots.

Potential

Negotiations are ongoing over some land parcels before work can start on the scheme.

The council has estimated that it has the potential to employ up to 1,200 people.

Officers said they were hopeful of attracting significant investment and aim to start marketing the site in the next few months.

Mr Madge said: “We are continually looking to the future and job creation.

“I belive the Cross Hands East site will play a major part in this commitment,” he went on.

The new business park is being funded with £9 million from the Welsh Government, including the Western Valleys Regeneration Area programme, European Regional Development Fund and Transport grant.

The development will be managed and implemented by Carmarthenshire Council which is also investing £4 million in the scheme.

The council is also pushing an environmentally-friendly agenda, and said the site will be promoted as part of plans to reduce Carmarthenshire’s carbon footprint.

The ethos will be to source and sell within the local or regional area to reduce journey time, produce less waste, recycle waste communally and use space efficiently.

Mr Madge added that the project could be held up as an example of how to produce investment and growth as well as cutting the county’s carbon footprint.
