More than a 1,000 extra pupils in Swansea to get a Flying Start in life

A PROJECT giving young children a better start in life is being extended to more than a 1,000 extra pupils in Swansea.

Work is starting at six primary schools provide free child care facilities, more support for parents and extra health visitor support.

Swansea Council is spending millions of pounds of grant funding on Flying Start

It is part of the Flying Start programme, which is already helping thousands of families in the city and county.

The aim is to help an extra 1,229 two to three year olds to be better prepared for school with language, play and social skills.

And while they are gaining that important start to life their parents will be able to use Flying Start to improve their parenting skills and their chances of getting into employment.

Swansea Council is spending millions of pounds of extra grant funding to expand the programme to Gors primary, Clase primary, Craigfelen primary, YGG Tan-y-Lan, St Helens primary and St Thomas Community Primary School.

William Evans, the council's cabinet member for learning and skills, said: "The Flying Start programme has already made a massive difference to young people and families right across the city.

"This new investment is being focussed on some of the most deprived areas in Swansea, including our target areas, as part of the council's commitment to reducing poverty.

"By giving young families and children a boost at the start of their lives we have the chance to transform their futures so they can make the most of their talents as they grow up."
